Preparing for Your Procedure

The Pain Relief Surgicenter

Now that you have scheduled your interventional pain treatment, here are some things you need to know to prepare for your procedure. It is especially important to follow any directions that pertain to taking prescription or over-the-counter medications or herbal supplements.

MEDICATIONS: Medications can be taken ONLY 2 HOURS BEFORE your procedure, with a small sip of water ONLY. No clear liquids of any kind 2 hours before your procedure.

In most cases, you will need to stop taking anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) as directed by the doctor who prescribed the medication. However, do not stop taking any medication without authorization from the prescribing physician.

  • Discontinue Lovenox and Xarelto 24 hours prior to the procedure with written clearance from prescribing physician.
  • Discontinue Pradaxa 48 hours (2 days) prior to the procedure with written clearance from prescribing physician.
  • Discontinue Effient 10 days prior to procedure with written clearance from cardiologist.
  • Discontinue Plavix, Ticlid, and Aggrenox 7 days prior to the procedure with written clearance from the prescribing physician.
  • Discontinue Coumadin (Warfarin) 5 days prior to the procedure with written clearance from the prescribing physician. Lab work required no more than 24 hours prior to procedure.
  • Discontinue Brilinta 5 days prior to the procedure with written clearance from prescribing physician.
  • Discontinue fish oil > 2000 mg/day
  • Discontinue all aspirin products (Bayer, Excedrin, Anacin, BC Powder, etc…) 5 days before the procedure.
  • Also, discontinue the following HERBS: Feverfew and anything beginning with the letter G.
  • If you are on any antibiotics, call and let us know. We may need to reschedule your appointment.

FOODS/LIQUIDS: Nothing to eat or drink within eight (8) hours of the scheduled procedure time, with the exception of small sips of water with required medications.

ILLNESS: If you have a sore throat, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, urinary tract infection, or any other sign of illness, you will need to reschedule your appointment by calling (512) 836-1200. No procedure will be done if you are ill.
